First, I’d like to congratulate the Rebels, Reds, Pirates, Titans, Naturals and Padres for winning the championships within their divisions over at the Kansas City MSBL.

Second, I’d like to encourage all the league admins out there to take some time to think about how they run their league. Is it easy for you to manage or does it consume too much of your day? Is your membership happy or do they grumble about this and that? Are people well informed of your schedule and its last minute changes or are they confused and misinformed? JavaOne is an annual conference  to discuss Java technologies, primarily among Java developers. JavaOne is held in San Francisco, California. Technical sessions on a variety of topics are held during the day.  Sessions allow people to focus in on a particular aspect of Java technology.

The Right Question
First we need to address the right question, “How many people own a computer?” is not precisely correct. Our services are web-based, which means it exists on the internet, not the computer. So the right question is, “How many people use the internet?”. Okay, moving forward.

How many people use the internet?
According to the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, “74% of American adults (ages 18 and older) use the internet” ^[1]. Initially you may wonder how that may be, so we will break down some of the details. The Pew Research Center conducts a lot of studies and has tons of data to answer these questions.
Here’s some quick facts:

1. 60% of American adults use broadband connections at home ^[2]
2. 17% of those earning less than $30,000 per year are cell-only wireless users ^[3]
3. 54% [use their laptop to go online wirelessly] do so someplace other than home or work ^[4]

As can be seen from the data above, people find a way to be connected. They either use their cell phones, go to public places, or find other avenues to get to the internet. For more information, follow the links in the citations below.

Nick and Jon have been reading some great books as well. “Getting Real” by 37signals has some amazing concepts for web development. “Rework” is another book by 37signals that talks about their business development, that we will be reading soon. Another book is “The E-Myth Revisited”. It discusses why most small businesses don’t work and what to do about it.
